Squash Report for year ended 2009
We are pleased to report that we had a very active year both on and off the court. The energy of the young members of the committee was an inspiration. Their enthusiasm projected onto the courts, and was visible thro’ the players enjoyable participation in this great sport. As a committee we are happy to report that we achieved most of the objectives we set ourselves at the start of the year.
Premises:
(1) We had a glass door with security lock put in at the entrance to the squash court area. This installation has had the anticipated desirable effect. It cut out the draft, and unauthorised entry. (2) We got two wall-heaters installed in court three. They have added to the enjoyment of the game, and development and toning of squash skills. Both these were financed from funds generated by the squash committee, from eight in-house tournaments, running open events e.g., Senior Interprovincials in 2008, leasing out the courts for the Corporate Games in 2008, and two golf outings. There are still urgent outstanding repairs to both floors and walls to be attended to, and these will be on our priority list along with installing further wall heaters in courts 1&2, over the coming year. We will need both funds and voluntary help to achieved these improvements. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Financial Report:
We thank our Treasurer Chris McNamara for the careful handling of our financial affairs during the year. Chris has been a busy man of late with domestic chores. We wish to convey our congratulations to Chris and Jennifer on the arrival of their baby daughter Emily. A summary of our Income and Expenses for 2009 was distributed to members who attended the Squash AGM. We sincerely thank Jim McGann and his team for organising the two golf outings. Also our gratitude to all the golfers who supported these events. Without their help we would not have been able to heat court three this year. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Michael Kearsley for the carpentry work he done for us over the last few years. Ger Dunworth was also very helpful to us when we were assessing the insulation and temperature in the courts. It is much appreciated when we have members willing to give of their knowledge, and help defray expense to the club. This is in the true spirit of club life.
Gradings;
James McMorrow kept the list of Players’ Grades updated thro’out the year. We feel that most players are now properly graded and there are suitable competitions in place for all. James also monitored the Ladder and Booking Sheets. We thank him for his thorough attention to these duties during the year.
Coaching;
We set out to broaden the awareness of Squash locally. We were instrumental in getting the ‘transition year’ pupils at Villiers to use our facilities to experience the games of squash and tennis We thank Peter Hayes, Michael Kearsley and Eugene Pratt for their assistance in securing and helping with this programme. We used the services of a qualified coach for lessons for a small number of interested juniors. We now need to promote more interest in squash within the Club for juniors and get a recognised programme set up annually for January. Further it will be a priority to get more ladies playing. We will circulate a notice with the Sub Renewals to all ladies, to support a regular ladies’ squash night. This byweekly event would be geared towards beginners and some free initial coaching. This was an area where we under-performed this year and we need to put more energy into this area next year.
Tournaments.
The present system of spreading the various trophies amongst the different grades appears to have been a success and it is our intentions to continue on these lines. The results of the various competitions held during the year are attached We would like to acknowledge the efforts of Daryll Lynch, Chris McNamara, and Liam Byrne in the running of these tournaments and Barry Hession for his relentless work in keeping the North Munster Leagues alive and organising friendly matches. We further acknowledge the publicity the Club gets thro’ our players travelling to Open tournaments and friendly matches outside Limerick. Donal Carroll and Joe Coffey, particularly, have kept us on the map. Donal was also selected to play Munster this year. Well done lads. Our work was made all the easier by the support we received from the players. Receipt of early entries to tournaments, and punctuality for games, and spectator participation at finals night was very much appreciated. The tournament results and winners were published and distributed at our AGM held on the 25th of November 2009.
Annual General Meeting
The Squash AGM was very well attended, and we thank the Hon Secretary Claire McNamara and Hon Vice- President Judith McGill for officiating. We had an enlightening question and answer period, and it would appear that squash is very much alive within the club and we can look forward to another successful year in 2010.
The officers elected were:
Squash Captain, James McMorrow Vice-Captain, Barry Dwane Joe Coffey Michael Kearsley And co-opted members were Ger Dunworth and Des McCullough We wish them well in their year of office. Finally we would like to acknowledge the work and commitment of one particular committee member. Barry Hession has been a model member of LLTC. He joined as a young junior and played squash for the club and Ireland. He later acknowledged the help and enjoyment he got from the game thro’ giving many years service back to the Management and the promotion of squash. Barry has earned a well-deserved rest from committee work. We thank him for all the unselfish hours he has given us. We wish him well for the future, and look forward to seeing him more on the court.
