WORLD TEAM TENNIS FINALS
One of the most popular club competitions, the ambitiously named World Team Tennis Championships, came to an exciting conclusion on Wednesday February 24th with 3 hotly contested finals and many sets determined on the tie-breaker. In the top Europe flight, Team Spain, comprising of Ger Collopy, Maureen Parkes, Marie Costelloe and Claire McBride pulled off a fine victory over Team France, consisting of Noel 'Freedom Fries' Rice, Eileen Howlett, Jennifer Cooney and Mary Dillon. Over on the American continent, President Gerardo Clancy led his South of the Border Mexican team of James Barry (Jaime Barrio), Eithne Murphy and Karin Hogan to a narrow, down-to-the-wire victory over Team Argentina, fronted by General Fergus O'Shaughnessy, Eugene Pratt, Elaine O'Brien and Dympna Tobin. And in the closest contest of the night, the up and coming Continent of Asia produced a team of winners from India represented by Matt Richardson, John 'Clareview' Hogan, Aisling Angland and Freda Fitzsimons who short-headed the four Singaporeans, John 'Old Crescent' Hogan, Sean Burns, Mary Richardson and Jeannie Rene by 25 games to 24. |
