The weekend of the 25/27 April, 2014, Limerick Lawn Tennis Club hosted the 30th
South of Ireland Veterans Championship. Entries included
interprovincial players from Leinster, Munster and Connaught. Local and
club players were prominent as well. The weather was a great help, and
the event was refereed very well by Philip Jones. The
men's 35 singles and doubles went to Barry McCarthy and his partner
Pat Bradley, both from Killaloe. The men's 45 singles and doubles went
to Galway pair Pat Dillon and Donal Hegarty. Men's 55 singles was won by Richard McCarthy (St. Anne's TC), he also won the men's 65 doubles with William Hanover. The
ladies 35 doubles went to Tipperary pair, Trudy Kennedy and Jacinta
Coleman. The 50 doubles was won by Sile Lonergan and Madeleine Kelly
from Killaloe. The mixed 55 doubles was won by Declan Webster and Jill McCormack beating local pair Declan Harkin and Angela O'Dwyer. The
ladies 60 doubles went to Cork ladies Suzanne Hayes and Kay Lynch. The
mixed 65 doubles was won by Martin Leahy and Rose Houlihan beating his
men's doubles partner Brendan Boylan and Kay Lynch. The men's 65
doubles was a great game worth waiting for, hot favorites Martin Leahy
and Brendan Boylan were pipped at the post by Richard McCarthy and
William Hanover in a close tie-break. So we had
a brilliant weekend of tennis, several inter-pro's took part and we
hope to have them back for the Irish Open on the June Bank holiday
weekend. So come on Club Members, this is your chance to get an Irish
Open Title. A big thank you to our very
generous Sponsors, HLB, McKeogh Gallagher Ryan who were very well
represented by Sile Casserly. Also a big thank you to all the senior
tennis committee and to Kieran O'Brien for all their help. A special thank you to Conall Moore, our IT expert. It was a wonderful weekend, loads of tennis and sunshine and a very successful tournament . Tony O'Donoghue, Chairperson Senior Tennis Committee |
